wiki... wacky....woo!

I am in the process of contemplating creating a SMARTBoard Wiki to be used by North Country School districts as they integrate SMARTBoards into their daily curriculum.
But as I read the information, i hear "whaw, whaw, whaw, whaw!" (* in the teacher voice from Charlie Brown*) WOW!! I am feeling totally inadequate for the task as hand. I guess I need to figure out what I need and then proceed from there.

The one thing I have been able to pick up on: WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get

Other stuff = PHP, shell/root access, MySQL!!????

Okay....I guess I need help!!!

LiveBinders

One of my FAVorite finds of the summer (thanks to Barb NR) is LiveBinders. This Web 2.0 tool allows educators to create online binders as a way to organize websites, videos, pdfs, images into subject areas, topics, units....whatever structure you desire!

It is free, requires registration, but you can make as many binders as you want.
Think online resources that a team of teachers could collaborate on to create units or to organize their online data!

Flitting with Fractions

http://www.learningmedia.co.nz/staticactivities/online_activities/flitting_with_fractions/

This site, both in English and Maori, is a visual representation of how to start teaching fractions. Using the idea of catching fireflies in a jar, students need to sort the fireflies, close the lid and then provide both the numerator and divisor for the fraction. This would be an awesome lesson for a SMARTBoard classroom!

Mr. Picassohead

When my own children send me fun sites, I love it, so special thanks Bekkah for this one!

Mr Picassohead is a combination of the art style of Pablo Picasso and Mr. Potato Head put together online. You are able to create your own piece of artwork, sign your name and email it's addy (address) to some chosen recipients. Is it educational? Well maybe not to anyone except art teachers, but it sure is fun, and after all....it is Friday! Enjoy!

PicLits

Pic Lits is a really neat creative writing site that provides pictures and a word bank for students to create a enriched sentence or sentences about the picture. “The object is to put the right words in the right place and the right order to capture the essence, story, and meaning of the picture.” Students can choose to only drag words from the word bank to create their sentence or compose a sentence freestyle.

Emailing (attaching) SMARTBoard Files

There are lots of ways to email (attach) files, but some things never change.

#1. ALWAYS save to your desktop., and
#2. Try to keep the file as small as possible.

Keeping these things in mind, following are directions on how to email a SB file.

1. find the SmartBoard / Notebook file.
2. Move the file to the desktop.
3. Right Click on the file, click on send to compressed (zipped) folder. (the folder will go to the desktop)
4. Open your email program (logging in)
5. Click on new (create)
6. Type in the email address of who you want to send the file to
7. Click on the Attachments button.
8. Click Browse and then click on desktop (side)
9. Click on the zipped folder you created.
10. Click on open at the bottom of the screen (you will go back to the email screen)
11. Click Insert File.
11. Your screen should flicker and you should see the attachment with a red X, under where you were just inserting the file.
12. Click send.

Good luck and thanks Linda S. for asking for this!

Photography by National Geographic

I remember being enthralled by the pictures in the National Geographic magazine as a kid in the 70's and 80's. BTW...it was when cameras used real film and it took more than 24 hours to get your photos developed! I have always had a fascination with photography and I believe National Georgaphic still has some of the best in the world.

The photography portion of the National Geographic website is a great way to expand the horizons of students by showcasing other parts of the world, showing close-ups of patterns, or just the amazing animal shots that are available. Check it out!

SMARTBoard Revolution

Visit SMART Board Revolution

If there was just one place, one site I could give every teacher with a SMARTBoard, it would be a Ning called SMARTBoard Revolution! http://smartboardrevolution.ning.com (In case you've never heard of a Ning, they are social networks connected around an idea, in this case SMARTBoards.)

There are approximately 4,800 members within this Ning, all using SB's around the world. There are various groups within the SB Rev Ning including Music, 3-5 teachers, SMARTBoards in the Middle School, and on and on. This is the place I go when I am trying to troubleshoot an issue with a board. To simply to put it.....this is the PLACE TO BE if you have a SMARTBoard in your classroom! CHECK IT OUT!

Bloom's Digital Taxonomy

Not too many articles stop me in my tracks during a regular school day. This one did! Most educator's remember Bloom's Taxonomy of Higher Thinking Skills from our undergraduate and graduate studies. LOTS and HOTS have been "reworked" to include new digital verbs. This is a great resource as we are now called to educate the generation of "Digital Natives".

Internet Archive

Internet Archive is "a digital library of internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital format". A few things you can do? Check out what the internet looked like 10 years ago (try 9-11-2001), look at past inaugurations, watch vintage cartoons (under moving images), or even browse the Live Music Archive. Lots of things to look at and use in the classroom!

Capture Tool with SMARTBoard / Notebook

One of the coolest tools I have FINALLY conquered lately is the Capture Tool (Camera) within Notebook software (SMARTBoard).

Here's the basics:

1. Start the Notebook software
2. Click on the camera and then minimize to the tray
3. Browse, get to the page or file you want to copy.
4. Bring the camera up (Click on Capture in the Tray)
5. Click on the first icon.
6. Click and drag over what you want to copy into the Notebook.
7. The camera will take a "picture" (copy) of what you chose and will place it into the Notebook software.

the four tools are:
Outline capture tool
Web page capture tool
Screenshoot capture tool (Just like a print screen )
Freehand Capture tool

They all work the same way, just a little different result. Give it a try!!

getting started

This is going to be an attempt to keep up with the latest "new" things I find everyday. technology tidbits by bond will be way to showcase to my peers the tools that they can put into their toolkit or techniques to enhance what they are already using.
